Betty Horaney, owner and president, said she considers the award a tribute to her late husband and his father, the founder of the 65-year-old feed, seed, agriculture and hardware store.
"This is one of the nicest honors we've ever had," Ms. Horaney said, adding she did not have any idea the business would receive an award. "I am very sincere when I say that, and I am very humbled by the honor."
Harry Horaney, an immigrant from Syria, opened Horaney's at 207 N. Court St. in 1940. His son and Betty's husband, Albert, began working in the store while he was in school. The business passed to Albert, who moved it across the street to its present location, 301 W. Methvin St., in the 1990s.
Betty Horaney said the city honored Harry Horaney by changing the name of Court Street to Horaney Street.
Ron Horaney, Albert and Betty's son, also works at the store.
Ms. Horaney said she will have the family heritage in mind when she goes to Waco to accept the award.
"My husband passed away 10 years ago and he worked very, very hard in this business," she said. "This goes to him and his family, and to his father, who started the business in 1940."
